Hugh Franklin 

Hugh received a B. A. in Mathmatics from Appalachian State University and a J. D. from Campbell Law School where he served as Business Editor of the Law Review,  Founding Editor of the Campbell Law Observer, and was recipient of the Fred O. Dennis Award for Leadership.  During school he studied summers at the Sorbonne and the London School of Economics, hosted a morning radio program on WASU, and as Chairman of the student popular programs committee, promoted concerts such as Ray Charles, B.B.King, Greg Allman, Crosby and Nash, America, and Seals and Crofts.

His legal career began in Rutherfordton, NC, as partner in the firm of Arledge Callahan and Franklin, where in addition to residential and commercial real estate he did trial work in state and federal court.  Over the course of his legal career Hugh defended several capital and non-capital murder cases, and has represented a wide variety of litigants ranging from juvenile delinquents, to a private equity factoring lender in the textile industry, to the owners of a rescue facility for wolves. Over time, Hugh’s solo practice centered on trials involving real estate, estates, and real estate development in general.

Hugh has served as President of the Rutherford County Bar;  President of the McDowell County Bar;  Board Chair of Pisgah Legal Services in Asheville, NC; Founding Chair of Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyers; Board Chair of the McDowell Partnership for Children and Families; Moderator of his local Board of Deacons; Member of the NC Sediment Commission; and Chairman of the North Carolina Mining Commission. He has also owned, developed and operated a family care home, and a 63 bed assisted living facility.  Hugh is a certified Superior Court Mediator.

Since 2007, Hugh’s practice has been focused on representing a group of land development companies, and on related work for lot purchasers, lenders and private equity investors.

 

Hugh is married to Jennifer Franklin, and has three children and three grandchildren.  Hugh enjoys sailing on the NC coast, hiking in the mountains, and travelling with his family.
